Sustainable living is on the high and as more and more people are preferring to grow vegetables at home, these are some easy and quick herbs and greens that you can grow.

Spice up your summer garden with some exotic summer herbs at home. It is a great way to expand your home garden and it is always better to garnish your dishes with freshly picked herbs that you have grown yourself.

Rosemary

Rosemary is one of the easiest plants to grow. It is a herb that has lots of fragrances. 

They can grow unsupervised. You can leave rosemary seeds in a large pot and leave them in a sunny spot to let them take care of themselves.

Rosemary belongs to the members of the mint family, it has many health benefits.

You can top food items like soups, casseroles, salads, chicken, oilfish, steak etc with rosemary herb.

It also goes well with spinach, mushrooms, onions, potatoes and grains.

Dill

It belongs to the family of celery and the big advantage to whoever will plant this seed is that it is widespread and can replant itself. 

Dill seeds are Dill is a plant that provides not only leaves that serve as herbs but also the seeds which contribute to the culinary as spices.

Peppermint

Peppermint is popularly known as mint leaves.

Peppermint is basically made from blending spearmint and watermint. It is a very aromatic plant. Peppermint is known for giving a refreshing and cool feeling, best known to beat the heat and used in coolers and or fresh teas. It is a very low maintenance plant.

It is available in different forms for consumption like capsules, leaves and oils.

Peppermint has shown various health benefits.

It is not only used in foods but also in cosmetics, soaps, mouthwashes, medicine and various products.

Thyme

Thyme has various benefits in diet, ornament and medicine. It is known to cure various symptoms. 

They can be used either fresh or dried. 

Thyme can be used in food and teas and also in layers of linen cloth to protect it from bugs.

It thrives in sheltered areas that receive an average amount of sunlight. It is around for a variety of meals.

Basil

Basil is quite popular as it gives a leafy and flavorful touch. It exists in various varieties. 

This aromatic herb is mostly used for garnishing food and also in tea. The supplements provide an individual with great health benefits.

You should grow this plant in well-drained soil and prune it regularly for better growth.

There are five common basil varieties, namely; lettuce, Thai, bush cinnamon and sweet.

The basil that is mostly used by us is the holy basil that goes into the supplements and the herbal tea.

The oil that is provided by basil is known as essential oil as it is high in aroma.

Basil gives your body essential plant compounds and only Vitamin K.

Chamomile

For thousands of years, chamomile has been used for healing benefits and it helps in calming anxiety and stomach.It has been used in herbal tea across the world.

You can even combine chamomile with other plants and it results in health benefits, proven by studies. 

Chamomile when used on the body, in the form of leaves or oils, it helps in reducing irritation and heals the wound.

As you know, Chamomile is a common ingredient in tea and can be used in other drinks and foods as well.

Growing this will not only make your garden look beautiful but also it is easy to take care of as it requires dry soil, not much water and grows in good amount of sunlight.

Parsley

Parsley is a popular herbs used in cooking. It elevates the taste of soups, salads and food items. It is very nutritious and has high health benefits. 

One of the benefits is that it can be grown all around the years. It grows best in moist soil. Fertilizers boost growth thus they should be added whenever you see yellow leaves.

Parsley provides an individual with Vitamin C, K and A.

Lavender

Oh yes, how can anyone who is interested in home gardening miss growing these? Lavender is a beautiful aromatic plant that not only looks gorgeous in your garden but is also edible.

It is a part of the mint family. In history, it is said that lavender was used as a holy herb and today is used to provide lighter scents. It is also used for therapeutic and medicinal benefits. 

It also helps improve sleep and heals any blemishes. Lavender and its tea have positive effects on stress, anxiety, depression and mood. 

You should know different types of lavender and their benefits before choosing the one to plant. 

It is preferred if you grow lavender in moist soil and initially water it once or twice a week and then slowly reduce it to be watered in two or three weeks,

It can be used in soaps and body washes too. 

Oregano

Who doesn’t love Dominos! We all save those oregano and chilli flakes packets, so why not get the feel of eating fresh oregano from your garden itself.

Oregano is a culinary herbs and tastes best when dried. It is used by people as a supplement and aromatic oil.

It helps in healing aching muscles, indigestion, skin sores, asthma and many more such ailments. 

Oregano oil also has various benefits.

It provides an individual with vitamin C, A and E nutritional benefits.

It pairs well with pasta, pizza, tomato, fish, vegetable and chilli dishes.

The more you harvest oregano, the more it grows and it requires part shade and only part sunlight. Need not be watered regularly.

Fennel 

Fennel is grown for its edible leaves, seeds and shoots. The parts of this plant are very aromatic and used for flavouring dishes. It is used for adding aromatic flavours to candies, fish, pastries, sweet pickles, liquor and medicines.

It provides your body with vitamins A, C and B-6.

It increases metabolism, keeps your heart rate in check, controls blood pressure, improves bone health, and helps reduce weight. As fennel is very crunchy, it compliments any dish whether cooked or eaten raw. 

It is best grown in warm soil and the area should be moist before planting your seeds. It is recommended if you soak the seeds for a day or two as it helps with better germination. It produces aromatic fruits and should be planted in a better sunlight receiving area. It reseeds itself and grows aggressively, thus keep your plant in check. Do Not grow it near Dill. provide the plant with additional water if the weather is hot and dry, also it needs mild pesticides. Once you have everything set and taken care of initially, it does not require much attention in the process.

Sage

The sage plant has edible flowers and leaves. 

Fun fact: there exist more than 900 species of the sage plant. 

It is said that sage happens to contain a range of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Sage is usually consumed in small amounts. It provides an individual with vitamin A and K. It is said to have a positive effect on patients with Alzheimer’s, controls inflammation and lowers cholesterol.

Sage is very easy to grow plant and serves excellent culinary herbs to meat and bean dishes. 

You should plant sage in good sunlight and well-drained soil. Small sage plants need to be watered regularly so that they don’t dry out. It tastes best when eaten fresh but can also be frozen.
